My Lord,
I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt
of Your Lordship's despatch No. 110 of the 18th March regard ing the question of Messrs. Arnhold Karberg and Company's
trade marks.
2.
I may refer to the concluding paragraph of Sir Henry May's despatch No. 356 of the 7th November, 1917, and also to the Board of Trade's letter of the 4th February,
1918, which formed the fifth enclosure in Mr. Long's despatch No. 42 of the 13th February, 1918. It does not seem equit-
able that Messrs. Arnhold Brothers and Company should take
the assets without the liabilities; and I concur that, as
they have proved their claim to the goodwill, they should be required to make arrangements to liquidate the pre-war claims against the Hongkong branch of the old firm as a
condition precedent to the assigment to them of the trade
marks. I attach a copy of a paragraph from the Liquidators'
report, showing the amount of the liabilities.
3. I should be glad to have Your Lordship's
instructions in this matter.
HE RIGHT HONOURABLE
BC..
VISCOUNT MILNER, G.C.B.,
80..
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordship's most obedient,
humble servant,
Cland Severn
Officer Administering the Government.
